Arbitrary Detentions, Torture, and Extralegal Interrogations
These stories are real-life accounts from Afghan women living under the self-proclaimed Taliban regime. They have been collected through direct interviews with victims of human rights violations.
In other words, these are highly condensed versions of interviews with women's rights activists who played leading roles in launching, expanding, and sustaining the spontaneous women's resistance movement in Afghanistan during the Taliban's first three years in power.
Although most interviewees agreed to the use of their real names, we have chosen to use pseudonyms as a precaution. This helps protect their mental health by avoiding the need to relive painful experiences and prevents any potential threats to their families, who still live in Kabul and other provinces.
A detailed legal analysis of these accounts, framed within universal human rights principles and international treaties, is available in the "Analyses and Reports" section of our website.
